The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former South African cricketer Michael Smith as the batting coach of the Pakistan men’s national cricket team on a two-year contract.
The 46-year-old will oversee the team's batting preparations in both Test and white-ball cricket. He is expected to join the national squad ahead of Pakistan’s three-match Test series against England, which begins on August 19, 2026.
Smith brings a wealth of experience as both a player and a coach. During his domestic playing career in South Africa from 2003 to 2013, he scored more than 7,000 runs across all formats, including nine centuries, establishing himself as a consistent top-order batter.
A Level 4-qualified coach, Smith has built an impressive coaching résumé over the past decade. He has worked with several Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises, including Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, and Multan Sultans
The PCB said Smith will officially assume his duties before the England Test series, where he will begin working closely with Pakistan’s batters as the team prepares for a demanding international season. His coaching skills will improve the batting performance in all format of cricket
Pakistan will be aiming for a strong showing against England, and Smith’s arrival is expected to provide technical expertise, tactical insight, and valuable international coaching experience to the batting unit. His familiarity with the Pakistan cricket environment through the PSL is also expected to help him integrate quickly into the national setup.
